Senior Congress leader and DDC Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony, has urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to shift the government’s focus towards the long-overlooked rural sector, emphasizing the dire need for road infrastructure development in remote areas.
Leading a deputation of over 100 people to Rajesh Kumar Gupta, Chief Engineer PW(R&B) Department, Jammu, Tony highlighted the decades-long delay in the construction of roads from Chata to Rati Sarari and from Village Bermini onwards. He lamented that in the absence of proper roads, residents—particularly children—are forced to walk long distances on foot to access basic education in Bermini.
Additionally, the senior Congress leader pointed out the deteriorating condition of roads from Bathindi to Rati Sarari and Chata to Rati, stating that these key links are in urgent need of repair. The deputation submitted a memorandum to the Chief Engineer, demanding immediate intervention.
Responding promptly, the Chief Engineer directed the subordinate staff to include the neglected roads in the upcoming development plan while ensuring immediate repair work on critical stretches.
Tony also raised concerns about the deplorable state of roads in Langer Colony near Kunjwani, stressing that urgent repair work is required to improve connectivity. He highlighted that while already blacktopped roads in urban areas are being resurfaced, rural residents are still compelled to navigate muddy and broken roads. Furthermore, Tony urged the administration to expedite the construction of a double-lane bridge between Jallo Chak to Greater Kailash on Landoi Nallah, which he described as a crucial project for improving connectivity in the region.
Reiterating his commitment to equitable development, Tony called upon the government to ensure that rural infrastructure is placed at the forefront of planning and execution, rather than being continuously sidelined in favor of urban-centric projects.
