Dogra Degree College Hosts Guest Lecture on Intellectual Property Rights for Budding Innovators and Entrepreneurs

Dogra Degree College held an insightful guest lecture on “Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Its Importance for Innovators and Entrepreneurs” on 14th November 2024. The lecture was led by Mrs.Arushi, an expert in intellectual property law. The session aimed to deepen understanding among first-year BBA, B.Com, and BA students regarding the significance of IPR in fostering innovation, securing business value, and safeguarding ideas in a competitive market. The objectives of the lecture were to provide students with an understanding of the concept and types of Intellectual Property Rights, highlight the role of IPR in encouraging innovation and protecting creative works, show how IPR can be leveraged as a strategic asset in business and entrepreneurship and encourage students to consider IPR’s role in their future business ideas and academic projects.
The session began with welcome note presented by Ms. Amarpreet Kaur, Lecturer at Dogra Degree College.
Mrs. Arushi’s lecture covered a comprehensive range of topics, structured to offer practical insights into IPR for budding entrepreneurs and innovators Mrs. Arushi began by explaining that IPR consists of legal rights that protect creations of the mind, such as inventions, brand names, artistic works, and business strategies. She covered the six main types of IPR: Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights, Trade Secrets, Industrial Designs, and Geographical Indications. Using real-world examples, she helped students grasp how each type applies to different aspects of business and innovation. She emphasized how IPR incentivizes creators to invest in their ideas by providing them with exclusive rights and protection against unauthorized use, also She highlighted that by securing IPR, innovators can protect their unique products and services, enabling them to establish a solid presence in the market and prevent competitors from copying their ideas. Mrs.Arushi also addressed the financial and procedural challenges associated with securing IPR, particularly for startups and small businesses, which may struggle with the high costs and complexities of the legal process. She encouraged students to prioritize their most valuable assets when managing IP costs and consider seeking expert guidance to navigate these challenges effectively.
Following her presentation, Mrs. Arushi engaged in a lively Q&A session where she answered questions from students. She highlighted that entrepreneurs often overlook the need for IP protection in the early stages or fail to understand geographical restrictions, which can lead to complications.
The lecture by Mrs. Arushi provided valuable insights into the essential role of IPR in business and innovation, with practical examples and strategies for first-year students in BBA, B.Com, and BA programs. The lecture highlighted the importance of IPR as a means of protecting unique ideas and establishing a competitive edge, inspiring students to consider how IPR can support future projects. Session windup with Formal Vote of Thank presented by Ms .Monika ,Member of IIC of the College.
The whole event was organised under the Convenership Ms. Rachna Devi ,Assistant Professor assisted by all members of the IIC under the guidance of Dr. Bela Thakur (Principal, Dogra Degree College). The event winded up with the singing of the National Anthem.
