District Disaster Management Authority Udhampur commemorated the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) 2024 by organizing two impactful disaster awareness and capacity-building programs here today under the guidance of Chairman DDMA Saloni Rai.
These programs aimed at enhancing community preparedness and resilience, in alignment with the global objectives of IDDRR, which is observed annually on October 13 to promote disaster risk awareness and reduce vulnerabilities, following the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
In collaboration with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Civil Defence, DDMA Udhampur organised a program at Government Higher Secondary School, Garhi Udhampur. The event witnessed the participation of around 250 individuals, including students and staff, who were trained in essential disaster management skills such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), first aid, the Civil Defence/Disaster Management Act of 2005, evacuation procedures, and earthquake safety protocols. This hands-on session aimed to equip participants with the skills to manage emergencies effectively.
Simultaneously, DDMA Udhampur, in partnership with Fire and Emergency Services, hosted another program at Government Higher Secondary School Battal Ballian, Udhampur. Around 250 participants, including students and staff, attended the session led by the Consultant from DDMA Udhampur and Sarvesh Langer, Assistant Director, Fire & Emergency Services, Command Udhampur/ Reasi.
This interactive program focused on fire safety, providing insights into different types of fires, prevention methods, and fire control techniques, culminating in a practical fire safety demonstration.
Both programs highlighted the critical importance of disaster preparedness and rapid response.
In her concluding remarks, Saloni Rai, Chairman DDMA Udhampur, emphasized the need for continued efforts to build resilience at the community level, empowering the younger generation with the knowledge and skills necessary to face disaster-related challenges.
