The 8th edition of the India-Kazakhstan Joint Military Exercise, KAZIND-2024, commenced today at the Surya Foreign Training Node in Auli, Uttarakhand. This joint exercise, which has been held annually since 2016, will run from 30th September to 13th October 2024. The previous edition took place in Otar, Kazakhstan, from 30th October to 11th November 2023.
KAZIND-2024 aims to enhance the joint military capabilities of both nations in counter-terrorism operations under sub-conventional scenarios, guided by Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. This year’s exercise will focus on conducting operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain, which presents unique tactical challenges.
The Indian Armed Forces are represented by 120 personnel from the KUMAON Regiment, along with support from other arms and services, including personnel from the Indian Air Force. Kazakhstan’s contingent will be primarily composed of Land Forces and Airborne Assault Troopers.
The objectives of KAZIND-2024 include improving joint physical fitness, refining tactical-level drills, and sharing best practices between the two military forces. Specific tactical drills to be rehearsed during the exercise include joint responses to terrorist activities, establishing a Joint Command Post, setting up an Intelligence and Surveillance Centre, securing helipads or landing sites, conducting combat free fall and Special Heliborne Operations, as well as performing Cordon and Search operations. Additionally, both sides will practice using drones and counter-drone systems, which are increasingly important in modern warfare. This exercise facilitates greater interoperability between the Indian and Kazakhstani forces, building strong bonds of camaraderie and mutual understanding. It allows both nations to learn from each other’s tactics, techniques, and procedures in handling joint military operations. The joint drills and rehearsals will enable the forces to prepare more effectively for real-world counter-terrorism scenarios.
Furthermore, KAZIND-2024 strengthens defense cooperation between India and Kazakhstan, deepening bilateral relations and fostering greater collaboration between the two nations. This annual exercise remains a critical platform for enhancing military-to-military relations and promoting peace and stability in the region.
