In line with the Indian Army’s tradition of fostering adventure, teamwork, and leadership, the Tiger Division organized a 12-member cycling expedition. The 28-day journey will take the team from Chandigarh to Manali, passing through the Shipki La pass in Himachal Pradesh, which stands at an elevation of 13,420 feet. The expedition, covering a total distance of 1,192 kilometers, was flagged off by Major General Mukesh Bhanwala, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 26 Infantry Division, Jammu, on 25th September 2024.
The objective of this cycling expedition is to showcase the Indian Army’s resilience and indomitable spirit, as well as its ability to overcome harsh weather and difficult terrain in high-altitude regions. Furthermore, it aims to reach out to and connect with the residents of the border villages, showcasing the Army’s dedication to national integration and civilian engagement.
The expedition will cover 42 villages along the route, including 10 vibrant first villages declared by the Government of India and the Himachal Pradesh Government. These are strategically important villages located near the nation’s borders.
By interacting with the local populations, the Indian Army seeks to strengthen its bond with these communities and spread awareness about the opportunities available for young men and women to join the armed forces.
As part of the outreach, the expedition team will engage with ex-servicemen (ESMs), Veer Naris (widows of martyrs), and gallantry award-winning soldiers from the Indian Armed Forces.
These interactions aim to honor the contributions of the veterans and war heroes while inspiring the youth to follow their path by joining the Indian Armed Forces. The team will also highlight various entry schemes available for both officers and soldiers, including the Agnipath Scheme.
In addition, the expedition team will promote the participation of girl students in military careers, supporting the government’s Women Empowerment drive. Information will be provided on entry into institutions like the National Defence Academy (NDA), Officers Training Academy (OTA), and military schools.
The team will also interact with civil administration officials and local village representatives to further strengthen the relationship between the armed forces and the civilian population, emphasizing the military’s continuous efforts in national integration and the development of border regions.
The 28-day cycling expedition is expected to inspire the local youth, boost civil-military cooperation, and reinforce the commitment of the Indian Army toward the development and security of the nation.
