Prof. Gupta’s period was golden era of NIT Sgr: Registrar Prof Atikur Rahman

Professor (Dr.) Rajat Gupta, former Director National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar and a Senior Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at NIT Silchar since 1996, has superannuated as of Wednesday, July 31, 2024.
He served as the Director NIT Srinagar from 2011 to 2016, where he played a key role in streamlining operations and restoring a focus on academics and harmony.
At NIT Srinagar, Prof. Gupta introduced innovative programs, and secured Ph.D. scholarships from the Ministry. He was known for his excellent professionalism with an extraordinary attitude and approach, even when dealing with difficult situations.
While expressing his gratitude to NIT Srinagar, Prof. Gupta said, “Today I am culminating my official journey of about 41 years at REC/NIT Silchar. The Almighty God gave me an opportunity to be associated with the NIT Srinagar family for five years during 2011 to 2016.”
“Without a doubt, I spent the best part of my career at NIT Srinagar. I want to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to all of you for your unconditional love, support, and encouragement. I will cherish this for the rest of my life,” the former Director said in his message.
Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. A. Ravinder Nath extended his best wishes to Prof. Gupta for his life after retirement. This new chapter would bring Prof. Gupta personal satisfaction and happiness.
Prof. Atikur Rahman, Registrar, NIT Srinagar described Prof. Gupta’s tenure at the institute was a golden era. During that period, NIT Srinagar experienced significant growth and development, thanks to Prof. Gupta’s visionary leadership and dedication,” he said.
Prof. Rahman said during Prof. Gupta’s tenure the institute made significant advancements, including the conception and realization of several major infrastructure projects.
“It included construction of a state-of-the-art auditorium, a well-equipped guest house, new hostels, residential quarters for faculty and staff, and an impressive new playground that greatly enhanced recreational facilities,” he said.
Prof. Rahman extended his heartfelt best wishes and hopes for good health to Prof. Gupta. His contributions to NIT Srinagar will be remembered with great appreciation and respect, he added.
Meanwhile, all Deans, Heads of Departments, Heads of Centers, faculty members, and non-faculty staff at NIT Srinagar have conveyed their warmest wishes to Prof. Gupta.
They expressed their deep appreciation for his remarkable contributions and dedication, acknowledging the lasting impact he has made on the institute.
Prof. Gupta, a national scholarship holder and a Ph.D. graduate from IIT Delhi was born in 1959 and has been a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at NIT Silchar since 1996.
He was President of the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) at NIT Silchar. He served as the Director of NIT Srinagar, NIT Mizoram, and NIT Silchar. Prof. Gupta has supervised Ph.D. scholars. He has published over 200 papers in national and international journals and conferences.
Prof. Gupta has chaired many conferences both in India and abroad, where he also delivered keynote addresses. His research interests include thermo-fluids, non-conventional energy, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), among others.
Prof. Gupta had received numerous accolades, including the Education Leadership Award, the Rajiv Gandhi Education Excellence Award, and the Eminent Engineering Personality Award by the Institution of Engineers (India).
He has also served as the Chairman of the Mizoram State Centre of the Institution of Engineers, India.
