The 13th edition of the Joint Military Exercise MAITREE between India and Thailand commenced with an opening ceremony held on 03 July 2024 at Tak Province in Thailand. This annual training event, which alternates between India and Thailand, is taking place after a four-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The previous edition was held in 2019 at Umroi, Meghalaya.
The ceremony was attended by senior military officials from both nations. The Chief Guests for the event were Lieutenant General Kittipong Jamsuwan, the 3rd Corps Commander of the Thailand Army, and Group Captain Brijesh Paul from the Indian Air Force, who serves as the Defence Attache to Thailand.
In their opening remarks, both representatives emphasized the deep civilizational and historical ties between India and Thailand. They underscored the significance of the MAITREE exercise in strengthening military collaboration between the two countries. The leaders highlighted the role of such joint exercises in enhancing mutual understanding and interoperability, which are crucial for regional security and stability.
Following the speeches, a formal exchange of mementos took place between the Indian and Thai sides, symbolizing the goodwill and cooperation between the two nations. Group Captain Brijesh Paul handed over the Flag of the Indian Army contingent to Lieutenant General Kittipong Jamsuwan, marking the official commencement of the exercise.
The ceremony also included an interaction session where the representatives from both countries engaged with each other’s military contingents. This interaction provided an opportunity for the troops to share experiences and insights, fostering camaraderie and teamwork.
One of the highlights of the event was a display of Thai martial arts by the troops of the Thailand Army. The demonstration showcased the rich cultural heritage and combat skills of the Thai military, adding a unique element to the ceremony.
Exercise MAITREE aims to enhance the interoperability between the Indian and Thai armies through joint training and operations. It includes various drills and exercises designed to improve tactical skills, coordination, and understanding between the two forces. The exercise also focuses on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, reflecting the shared commitment of both nations to regional peace and security.
