In a move reminiscent of Varanasi’s famed Ganga cruises, Basohli, nestled on the border of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, is set to introduce luxury cruises on the picturesque Ranjeet Sagar Lake. This initiative marks a significant step towards developing tourism in the region, which is renowned for its charming valleys and historic villages.
Under the ‘Bharat Darshan 2.0’ initiative, which aims to develop themed tourism circuits across 57 identified locations in India, Basohli has been included as a key destination. The Ministry of Tourism has already initiated the appointment of consultants to facilitate the development of these tourist circuits.
Ranjeet Sagar Lake, the largest water body in the tourist circuit covering Basohli, Bani, and Sarthal, has been recognized by the central government as a potential international waterway. Sources reveal that under the ‘Bharat Darshan Phase 2.0,’ projects worth Rs 300 crore have been sanctioned to enhance infrastructure in these areas, promising a transformative impact on local tourism and employment opportunities.
The Basohli Development Authority has been established by the government to bolster efforts aimed at promoting tourism in the region. While tourism activities have been gradually increasing in recent years, this new project places emphasis on enhancing local entertainment, facilitating employment opportunities, and ensuring home-stay arrangements for visitors.
Officials express optimism that connecting Basohli to Bani and Sarthal through the Bharat Darshan initiative will attract tourists from Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, fostering a direct route for visitors. Plans include expanding amenities in the coming years, ensuring various facilities along the National Waterway-84, connecting regions previously inaccessible by road.
The establishment of the Atal Setu in Basohli aimed to link Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir via road and waterways is underway. The Ravi River has been declared a national waterway by the Inland Waterways Authority, including it in the official gazette.
Spanning approximately 44 kilometers, this waterway is expected to boost tourism, promote interstate connectivity, explore aquaculture possibilities, and facilitate the direct delivery of goods and passengers to remote areas via waterways and roads.
As the ‘Bharat Darshan’ initiative unfolds, Basohli anticipates a surge in tourism, fostering economic growth while preserving local heritage and natural beauty. This development not only promises to enhance connectivity but also highlights India’s commitment to sustainable tourism infrastructure.
The evolution of Basohli into a prominent tourist destination signifies a milestone in regional development, poised to attract travelers seeking both cultural immersion and natural tranquility along the enchanting Ranjeet Sagar Lake.
