The Indian Meteorological Department Monday issued ‘heatwave’ and ‘severe heatwave’ warnings in several states from West Bengal to Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka. Maharashtra, too, is currently facing its second heatwave of the season, which is expected to continue till Tuesday.
The climate is expected to continue to be hot and humid in the next three days in most states across the country.
West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha are especially expected to feel the heat with temperatures between 40-45 degree celsius. The national weather agency has issued ‘heatwave’ to ‘severe heatwave’ alerts for these states until May 1; after which on May 2, ‘severe heatwave’ conditions are expected only in isolated areas.
As per the central agency, the temperatures in parts of Odisha and West Bengal were 4-9 degrees Celsius over normal for this time of the year. Temperatures in Mumbai are likely to oscillate between 38 and 39 degree Celsius in the coming days. Heatwave warnings in southern states
Additionally, heatwave warnings have also been issued for the southern states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala where the conditions will be severe for the next until May 1. In central India, Uttar Pradesh is especially likely to face the brunt of the scorching climate on Monday and Tuesday. Among other states where hot and humid climate is expected over the week are Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Goa. However, no heatwave warnings have been issued for these states.
On Sunday, the maximum temperature in the country was reported to be 45 degree Celsius in Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and parts of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh recorded a close second with temperatures rising up to 42 degree Celsius.
Isolated rain and snow
Assam and Meghalaya are due to see some respite from the heat this week as IMD has predicted high chances of rainfall in the two states, along with Arunachal Pradesh. From May 1 to 2, ‘isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall’ and warnings have been issued for the northeastern regions, which include Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
Arunachal Pradesh is also likely to see light to moderate snowfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning and gusty winds up to 40-50 kmph. Moreover, some relief is also expected in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday as scattered light to moderate rainfall is likely over the regions.
Rain is expected to lash other states in northern India, as well. Thunderstorms and lightning with hailstorms are expected to prevail over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on Monday. IMD has also forecasted similar weather on Tuesday for Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are also expected to see ‘isolated light rainfall’ with thunderstorms and lightning.
