The rise in crimes against women has been a grave concern for society at large, and the situation is no different in any part of the union territory. Women often face multiple forms of violence, including domestic violence, sexual harassment, and sextortion, leaving them vulnerable and traumatized. In such a context, the Sakhi One Stop Center has emerged as a major safeguard against crimes against women, marking an important step in the empowerment and protection of women in the region. Established under the aegis of the Social Welfare Department in December 2022, the Sakhi One Stop Center in Budgam’s district has gained significant prominence as a beacon of hope and support for women in need. Thousands of women have benefitted from its services, which include medical aid, legal assistance, counseling, and safe temporary accommodation. In a short period, the centre has successfully resolved over 170 cases related to crimes against women. The Sakhi One Stop Center is more than just a counseling service or temporary shelter. It acts as a one-stop solution for all related issues, catering to the specific needs and preferences of each individual. This personalized approach has ensured that women feel safe, secure, and heard, giving them the confidence to speak out against their perpetrators and pursue legal action without fear of stigma or retaliation. Moreover, the Sakhi One Stop Center has also taken proactive steps to raise awareness on women’s rights and engage the local community in the fight against crimes against women. Such initiatives have facilitated the creation of a support system, encouraging women to come forward and participate in the process of change and empowerment.
