Unchecked Inflation

In recent months, consumers across the nation have been grappling with the burden of skyrocketing prices in essential commodities, particularly mutton, fruits, and vegetables. This unchecked inflation has left households struggling to afford basic necessities, amplifying the challenges already posed by the economic downturn and the ongoing pandemic. The unchecked rise in mutton and poultry prices has become a pressing issue, sparking widespread concern among the local population. Last year, the government’s decision to end price control exacerbated the situation, leaving consumers grappling with soaring prices and no regulatory oversight. The Union Ministry’s notification advised the Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department of Jammu and Kashmir to refrain from enforcing price control, citing orders under S.O. 145(E) dated 15.02.1990. This effectively stripped the region of its ability to regulate prices for mutton and chicken, leaving consumers vulnerable to exploitation. Consumers are now facing the brunt of this decision, with mutton prices skyrocketing to Rs 700 to 750, significantly impacting household budgets. The absence of a regulatory authority has empowered retailers to charge exorbitant rates, further exacerbating the financial burden on consumers. An official from the department acknowledged the challenges, highlighting the limitations imposed by the National Food Security Act (NFSA). Previously, the department had the authority to regulate prices, but under current regulations, they lack the jurisdiction to intervene in the pricing of mutton, chicken, fruits, or vegetables. The absence of price regulation in the mutton and poultry market underscores the need for urgent action to protect consumer interests and ensure fair pricing practices. Without regulatory intervention, consumers remain vulnerable to exploitation, threatening their economic well-being and food security. The unchecked inflation in mutton, fruits, and vegetables poses a significant threat to the well-being and livelihoods of consumers. The failure of regulatory authorities to address this crisis underscores the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to safeguard consumer interests and promote a fair and equitable market environment. As consumers continue to bear the brunt of soaring prices, it is imperative for policymakers to take decisive action to alleviate their plight and ensure access to affordable and nutritious food for all.
