CUJ in Collaboration with Deptt of EERS and EIACP J&K Celebrates World Wetlands Day

The Department of Environmental Sciences Central University of Jammu in collaboration with Department of Ecology, Environment & Remote Sensing and EIACP J&K celebrated World Wetlands Day, 2024. The theme of World Wetlands Day for the year 2024 was “Wetlands and Human Well-being.” The M. Sc students of the Department visited Surinsar-Mansar wetland of Jammu Province recognized as one of the five Ramsar sites of International importance situated in the UT of J&K. The event was celebrated in collaboration with EIACP, J&K.
Dean SLS Prof. Sunil Dhar explained the formation of high altitude lakes in Himalayas leading to formation of Wetlands while HOD Prof. Richa Kothari spoke on the biodiversity of wetlands ecosystem. The welcome address was given by Lieut. Dr. Pankaj Mehta (ANO, Rank- Lieutenant) and coordinator of the event followed by the introductory remarks given by Dr. Ankit Tandon, Co-cordinator of the event. Dr. Majid, Scientist MoEFCC in his talk discussed the importance of trees, water bodies, biodiversity which need to be preserved at every cost for the existence of humans followed by distribution of ENVIS newsletter and ENVIS magazine among the students. He discussed the case studies about the rejuvenation of Wetlands of Srinagar District.
The keynote address was followed by an open house discussion where various schemes and initiatives taken up by the government of India such as Amrit Sarovar Project, Living with Nature, etc. to preserve and conserve the environment was discussed. A pledge was taken by the students for living a sustainable and healthy life by adopting best environmental practices under the guidance of Dr. Joshi from EIACP.
The formal vote of thanks was given by Dr. Shweta Yadav (Faculty, Dept. of EVS) while the comparing was done by Mr. Shubham Sharma and Mr. Sushil Lalotra (Research Scholar, Dept. of EVS).
