GDC Thannamandi holds extension Lecture on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

The Department of History in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Govt Degree College Thannamandi organized an extension lecture on the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. here today.
The extension lecture organized under the patronage of Principal of College, Prof. (Dr.) Farooq Ahmed in which Dr. Ashaq Malik, Coordinator IQAC was resource person. In his message, Prof. Farooq Ahmed underlined the relevance of introducing Dr. Martin Luther King among young minds is to enable them to become agents of positive change and responsible global citizens by inculcating the values of belongingness, nonviolence and equality as demonstrated by Dr. King. He appreciated the organizing team for taking this initiative for making the students and youth aware about life and works of Champion of Civil Rights Movements – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In the comprehensive PPT presentation, Dr. Ashaq elaborated, Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. championed the Civil Rights movements including ending legal segregation of the African – Americans in the south and other parts of United States of America in a nonviolent way and won Noble Peace prize of 1965 (youngest at that time). His iconic speech “I Have A Dream” on Aug. 28, 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. that was witnessed by some 250,000 gathering and powerful “Letter from Birmingham Jail” in Dr. King’s own voice, were part of lecture. He also explained 6 principles as well as six steps of Kingian nonviolence and spirit of beloved community with examples.
Earlier, Dr. Nazakat Hussain, Head Department of History and officiating Principal of College welcomed the audience and briefed about the history of people of color in America and discrimination they faced for ages before Dr. King’s civil, political and economic rights activism.
Prof. Asif Aijaz Lone, Head Department of Physics and NSS Programme officer in College introduced the audience how Birthday of Dr. King is celebrated as King Day in USA and rest parts of worlds since 1986 and conducted proceedings of the programme. Prof. Altaf Hussain, Head Department of Education and NCC Officer of College presented the formal vote of thanks. Prominent among others present on the occasion were Dr. Naseem Ahmed, Prof. Mudasir Majeed, Prof. Fatima Parveen, Prof. Supriya Gupta, Dr. Shiraz Ahmed, Prof. Rumy Dar, Mr. Anuj Bali (Librarian), Dr. Nisar Bhat and Dr. Nusrat Farooq.
