The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu organized the 9th workshop under the ongoing series for the students and scholars of the Department of Statistics and Philosophy on Monday, 15th Jan, 2024. Prof. Sarika Manhas, Faculty, Department of Home Science, University of Jammu was the resource person.
The programme was planned under the able guidance of Prof. Vishav Raksha, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies. The programme began with the welcome address by Dr. Hema Gandotra, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology and Director In-charge, Centre for Women’s Studies. Dr. Hema Gandotra spoke about the importance of conducting such workshops and stated that this effort is not only the UGC mandate rather a need to create gender awareness among the students and scholars to make inclusive campus. Further, she explained that through such sensitization workshops we can change the mindset and can have more percentage of other genders on the campus in the near future.
Prof. Sarika Manhas, the key resource person for the workshop, spoke about the relevance of Gender sensitization workshops especially for the students and scholars and said that this lecture can be a helpful tool in creating sensitive and inclusive society. She gave insights on the concept of Sex vs. Gender, Masculinity and Femininity and with the help of video clipping she explained how gender is socially and culturally constructed.
Further she elaborated on the concept of Gender Roles, Gender Stereotypes, Gender Typing and various causes of Gender Discrimination and Inequality in society.
While interacting with the participants she shared her personal experiences and also suggested the various ways through which we can overcome the Gender discrimination in the society.
Prof. Parmil Kumar Head, Department of statistics also shared his personal experiences and also deliberated on various issues related to gender.
A large number of students and scholars from both the Department of Statistics and Philosophy very enthusiastically participated in the workshop and shared their personal experiences and raised many queries which were answered to their satisfaction by the resource person. The workshop was conducted and coordinated by Dr. Saranjit Kaur, and the formal vote of thanks was presented by Ms. Kunzang Angmo both Faculty members, Centre for Women’s Studies.
