BARC Outreach Program enlightens GCET Jammu students on Nuclear Science and Career opportunities

The Government College of Engineering and Technology (GCET) Jammu organised an enlightening outreach program by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) on “ATOMS IN THE SERVICE OF NATION” under the patronage of Dr. Sameru Sharma, Principal in the college campus. The event aimed to acquaint students with career opportunities in the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and to provide them insight into various aspects of nuclear science.
Resource person Santosh H Takale, a Senior Officer/Head from BARC (MDD), delivered the lecture, emphasizing the significance of the nuclear field by highlighting the career opportunities within the DAE. The speaker highlighted the historical milestones including the development of indigenous reactors in India. It delved into the essential role of nuclear power in national security, energy production, and other applications, such as radioisotopes and advanced technologies. The students were also provided the information on the 1974 Pokhran nuclear tests and its impact on nuclear technology in fields like plant biotechnology, achieving 42 crop variations through radiation.
The future vision of the DAE, incorporating fusion reactions and advancements in materials, were discussed, encouraging students to identify their interests and pursue careers aligned with their passions.
G.R. Ursal, a Senior Officer/Group Head from BARC (TTCD), focused on career opportunities and the recruitment process, including the Orientation Courses for Engineering Graduates (OCES) and qualification required for various categories, within BARC. The students were further informed about the two nuclear tests conducted by India, undetected by foreign satellites. The program concluded with an open forum for questions, wherein students clarified doubts and sought advice. Aspiring candidates were motivated to excel in their academic pursuits, with specific focus on the upcoming GATE examination.
In the evening, “Star gazing and Sky observation session” was organized for students at Maha Maya Temple, Jammu providing students with a unique opportunity to explore the wonders of the night sky. Prof. Sameru Sharma, Principal GCET Jammu emphasized that the BARC Outreach Program will play a pivotal role in providing students valuable insights to explore the world of nuclear science, fostering an understanding of career opportunities.
She further opined that the interaction facilitated a dynamic exchange of ideas and knowledge, enabling students to gain a more comprehensive and practical understanding in the concerned subject.
She further acknowledged the efforts of the organizing team of the college comprising of Prof. Bhawna Sharma, Dr. Ajay Abrol, Er. Sanjeev Gupta, Er. Satdev, Ms. Cherry Sharma, Er. Rajat Sharma, Er. Amit Pandoh and student coordinating team including Reeya Rehan, Krishma Raina and Satvik in making the program a grand success.
