Poorthu, popularly known as “Mini Goa,” is set to add a thrilling new attraction for both domestic and international tourists. Following a successful trial on Saturday, motor paragliding is expected to become the latest adventure sport offering in the area.
The trials, which will continue for two more days, are likely to result in the administration granting permission for motor paragliding activities. This move is seen as a response to the growing popularity of Poorthu as a tourist destination, renowned for its picturesque Ranjit Sagar Lake and captivating boat rides. The introduction of motor paragliding is part of a broader initiative to enhance adventure sports in Poorthu—a small town in Basohli area of district Kathua.
The trial was supervised by local resident Mohinder Singh, a young enthusiast who has trained in motor paragliding in Pondicherry and is registered with the tourism department. He is now advocating for the introduction of this activity in Poorthu to promote tourism further.
The event drew attention from local residents and former heads of the Municipal Committee, advocating for quick permission from the Tourism Department to boost local tourism. With the cost of a four-minute glide around Rs 4,000, Singh is planning to offer competitive rates to attract more tourists.
Singh, who has been working in Pondicherry for two years, learned this skill in the army and believes that motor paragliding will significantly enhance Poorthu’s appeal as a tourist destination. His vision is to make motor paragliding more accessible, allowing tourists to enjoy the thrill without traveling to far-flung areas like Himachal Pradesh.
This isn’t the first time motor paragliding trials have been conducted in the region. Earlier attempts in Siyara, Basohli, despite being deemed suitable, had not progressed further. With renewed enthusiasm and successful trials, Poorthu looks set to become a hub for motor paragliding, offering tourists a unique opportunity to soar high and enjoy panoramic views of “Mini Goa.”
