Dogra Law College, DLSA Samba celebrates Constitution Day

IQAC and Legal Aid Cell of Dogra Law College in collaboration with DLSA, Samba commemorated the “Constitution Day” with a paper presentation programme on the topic “The Rights and Protection afforded to marginalized groups such as women and religious minorities” here today. The purpose of this event was to honor and remember the framers of the Indian Constitution.
The event started with the welcome address by Professor Avdhesh Pratap, Principal, Dogra Law College, in his welcome address he spoke about the historical significance of this day and how celebration of this day should be a collective event. This was followed by the lighting of the lamp by all the dignitaries and evoking the blessings of almighty, continued with the presenting of saplings to the dignitaries. The event proceeded further with the paper presentations made by students of 5 year BA.LL.B course highlighting the importance of this day.
The event was graced by D.C Raina, Senior Advocate and Advocate General J&K High Court, Adv. Tania Pargal, Panel Lawyer DLSA Samba, Adv. Rahul Sharma, Panel Lawyer DLSA Samba, Dr. Samar Dev Singh Charak, Secretary, Dogra Educational Trust.
D.C Raina, Senior Advocate and Advocate General J&K High Court, while addressing the students, said that a large number of provisions in the Indian constitution are borrowed from other Constitutions of the world. However, our Constitution has a few distinctive features that set it apart from other constitutions. The Constituent Assembly assessed many Constitutions and drafted one taking all the provisions that best applied to India’s diversity. He also elaborated on the true meaning of the Preamble of the Constitution and in a very interactive manner explained about how important the Indian Constitution is for every policy and bill which comes up.
Adv. Tania Pargal, Panel Lawyer, DLSA Samba delivered a powerful speech, she emphasized on the importance of women’s role in the society and mentioned the provisions in the Constitution of India which accords equality to women and empowers the State to adopt measures of positive discrimination in their favour. A number of Articles of the Constitution specially reiterated the commitment of the constitution towards the socio economic development of women and upholding their political right and participation in decision making.
Adv. Rahul Sharma, Panel Lawyer DLSA Samba said that under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 all women are entitled to free legal aid irrespective of their financial status. However, they continue to face multiple barriers in accessing justice and obtaining redressal of their grievances. Violence against women is pervasive within the domestic and in public places, but the amendments made in the Indian Constitution guarantees equality for men and women. A variety of rights-based laws have been enacted which outlaw domestic violence, provision for equal pay, provide equal right to property and inheritance and also provide protection against sexual assault and harassment.
Dr. Samar Dev Singh Charak, Secretary, Dogra Educational Trust thanked the DLSA for their tireless services towards legal awareness across the Samba District and appreciated the efforts of the esteemed guests in the field of Law and motivated the students to actively take part in all such activities and become responsible citizens of tomorrow.
The event Concluded with a Vote of thanks presented by Assistant Professor, Shuchi Sharma and followed by the playing of the National Anthem.
