District administration Kathua today organised a programme in the premises Gujjar & Bakerwal Hostel Kathua to commemorate 3rd Janjatiya Gourav Diwas. Chief Planning Officer, Uttam Singh was the chief guest, while Ex President MC Lakhanpur Surmu Din was the guest of honour. The event unfolded with the highlighting of achievements made with regard to the tribal welfare in the district during the current financial year.
The Students of Gujjar Bakarwal community presented the folklores besides throwing light on the life of great tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda in India’s freedom struggle and also highlighted the cause of tribal population. Speaking on the occasion, the CPO said the commemoration of Janjatiya Gourav Diwas is dedicated to appreciate the valued contributions made by the Tribal community in varied fields. He also threw light on the development initiatives undertaken in the district for the uplift of the Tribal community.
Later, the Chief Guest gave away prizes to the students of Gujjar & Bakkerwal Hostel who performed in the cultural programme. Pertinently, the Government of India has decided to celebrate November 15 as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’ to mark the birth anniversary of Tribal Freedom Fighter “Birsa Munda” from year 2021 onwards, who was not only a freedom fighter but also social reformer and led tribal movement, namely Ulgulan (Revolt) against exploitative systems of British Colonial Govt.
He is also known as Dharti Abba as he encouraged tribal people to understand their cultural roots & observe unity.
