As many as 137 nursing and paramedical students staying at a private hostel in Shaktinagara, Mangaluru fell sick due to suspected food poisoning after dinner on Monday night. Police sources confirmed that the students are undergoing treatment at various private hospitals.

City police commissioner N. Shashi Kumar said that students have been admitted to various hospitals in the city.

Shashi Kumar, who visited the hospital, said that the students were complaining of stomach ache, vomiting, and diarrhea since 2 am on Monday.

Meanwhile, parents and relatives alleged that they were not informed on the health conditions of their children and demanded to shift them to private hospitals for better treatment.

Though the exact cause of the food poisoning is not known as of now, water contamination is reportedly the likely cause.

The students started falling sick after having dinner at the hostel mess. Parents received late night calls from their children regarding the status and they were rushed to the spot.

The health department is taking necessary measures to monitor the situation. “They have been admitted due to food poisoning. There is no need to worry or panic as of now. We will visit the hostel, interact with the warden and find out the cause. There is no casualty and all students are out of danger,” said Dr Ashok, District Health Inspector.
