An MOU between the University of Jammu and ASCOMS & Hospital was signed for conducting Genomics Study in Cancer. The MOU signing ceremony was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor University of Jammu, Professor Manoj Kumar Dhar.
The MOU aims to create means for cooperative efforts between the University of Jammu and ASCOMS to affect the academic and clinical interchange of faculty, PG students, Post-doctoral fellows and students under an academic exchange programme and provide the foundation and framework for research in other human diseases as well. This historic MOU is the first of its kind between a Private Medical College and the University of Jammu to encourage the biomedical research collaboration in the areas of mutual interest, with Cancer Research being the initiator where the American Oncology Institute ASCOMS will provide the clinical material, and the Genomics study will be done at the University of Jammu.
Speaking on occasion, Professor Dhar, Vice-Chancellor University of Jammu, appreciated the efforts of both the institution to collaborate in the field of Human Genetic Research, especially in Cancer Genomics. He believed that the two institutions should also explore the other research areas as the number of diseases rises.
He stated that such kind of research activity would be beneficial for maintaining the good health of society at large. Dr Pavan Malhotra, Director Principal ASCOMS, while deliberating on this historic moment, stated that the incidence of cancer is on the rise and the genetic predisposition needs to be looked into to contain the fast spread of disease which is aiming to take the shape of an epidemic. He reiterated that the genomic studies would help identify the cause of this dreaded disease. In her address, Professor Seema Langer, Dean Life Sciences, stated that the MOU signing in Cancer Genomics is a welcome step for researchers of both the institutions for the better healthcare of society. She also noted that genetic dysfunction in cancer would help treat the disease more scientifically.
The function proceedings were conducted by Dr Parvinder Kumar, Institute of Human Genetics, Department of Zoology, University of Jammu. The MOU was signed by Prof. Arvind Jasrotia, Registrar University of Jammu and Dr Pavan Malhotra, Director Principal ASCOMS and was witnessed by Prof. Seema Langer, Dean Life Sciences and Mr Vikrant Singh, Regional Head (Finance) American Oncology Institute – ASCOMS. Among others who were present in the MOU signing ceremony were Prof. Sanjna Koul, Prof. B.K. Bajaj, Prof. Nisha Kapoor from School of Biotechnology, Prof. Piyush Malviya, Prof & Head Environmental Sciences, Dr Rakesh Kumar from Zoology Department.
