Saturday, the government said that Poonch had become the first district in J&K to achieve complete vaccination of its target population aged 18 plus years.

Additional Chief Secretary J&K Government (Health and Medical Education), Vivek Bhardwaj, said that J&K was “adopting an innovative approach” to achieve complete vaccination of all eligible age groups across districts.

He said district Srinagar had achieved complete vaccination of people aged 18 years plus.

“Everyone aged above 18 years in Poonch has taken both doses of the vaccination. The saturation in districts like this gives confidence to the Department of Health, and we are progressing well elsewhere,” Bhardwaj said.

He said in Srinagar that 95 per cent of the eligible population had taken the second dose while there was saturation of the first dose already.

Bhardwaj said that the vaccination was the government’s priority as a COVID-19 mitigation measure.

About the Omicron threat, he said vaccination was one of the major strategies that the government had focused on and increased the number of tests to detect more cases in time.

“We have more than 55,000 tests every day, and this is followed by aggressive tracking,” Bhardwaj said.

As per the Department of Health, Family Welfare, and Immunisation, the target population of Poonch district was 3.6 lakh.
