40 days Chilekalan to start from December 21, chances of snowfall from 23

Cold weather continues in Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. World-famous Gulmarg recorded a minimum temperature of minus 10.0 degrees Celsius on Thursday. It is a dry winter in the valley right now. Although a white blanket of snow is seen in the high mountainous areas, the snowfall is yet to happen in other low regions, including Srinagar.

The Meteorological Department has expressed the possibility of snowfall in the upper and lower areas of the valley from December 23, two days after the start of Chilekalan. The department says that due to the western disturbance, the weather patterns in the valley will remain sharp from December 23 to December 25. As a result, there may be more than average snowfall in the mountainous areas, while normal snowfall is also possible in the low-lying areas.

If the department’s forecast comes true, then it will be the first snowfall of the current winter in the plains. The Meteorological Department said that even though the weather patterns in the valley will remain dry like this till December 22, a similar drop in the minimum temperature will be recorded every day. Talking about today itself, the mercury at the world-famous resort in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district was minus 8.6 degrees Celsius last night, nearly two degrees Celsius.

Srinagar recorded a low of minus 2.1 degrees Celsius and minus 3.9 degrees Celsius from the previous night, the lowest temperature recorded in the season. Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 3.0 degrees Celsius, while last night’s minimum temperature was minus 412 degrees Celsius.

Pahalgam, a famous resort in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature minus 6.9 degrees Celsius. Whereas last night it was minus 6.4 degrees Celsius. Kokernag recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.0 degrees Celsius. While the minimum temperature last night was minus 3.9 degrees Celsius.

The official said the minimum temperature in north Kashmir’s Kupwara town was minus 4.5 degrees Celsius, minus 3.8 degrees Celsius last night. Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of 5.9 degrees Celsius, minus 3.3 degrees below normal.

Leh in Ladakh recorded a minimum temperature of minus 15.0 degrees Celsius. While the minimum temperature last night was minus 11.6 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the minimum temperature at the automatic Kargil station was minus 12.5 degrees Celsius. The official said Kargil, the world’s second coldest place after Siberia, recorded a minimum temperature minus 19.2 degrees Celsius in Drass.
