Srinagar: After the killing of a policeman by militants at Batamaloo in Srinagar on Sunday evening, security was enhanced on Monday, while slew of additional measures were being taken to avoid any further attacks.
Militants shot dead a policeman on Sunday evening at SD Colony Batamaloo from point blank range. This was the second such attack in this area since last over a month.
“Slew of additional measures are being taken to avoid any further incidents in city,” a senior police officer told Greater Kashmir. “At the same time, a hunt is on to nab the terrorists.” The officer said that in volatile areas some more bunkers have been established. “Wherever necessary, makeshift bunkers can come up.”
The officer said that police personnel have been advised to adhere with the advisory so that attacks on them are prevented.
“The prevailing peaceful atmosphere, rising number of tourist arrivals, visit of Union Minister and peaceful situation has brought frustration among the handlers across,” the officer said adding that elements inimical to peace won’t be spared.
“Most of the policemen killed this year were unarmed. Efforts are on to bring them to justice” the officer said.
In the backdrop of Sunday’s killing, security apparatus have been heightened in city and surveillance has been beefed up. On Monday extra personnel of police and paramilitary were deployed in city area including Lal Chowk, Jehangir Chowk, Hari Singh High Street, Regal Chowk, TRC Chowk, Polo View and the areas around the city center.
The officer said random checking of vehicles and frisking of people was being done as part of the security drill. The officer said that during Sunday night nakas were established at many places in city and movement of traffic was monitored. “Policemen in civvies have been deployed in nook and corner of city to gather the intelligence and monitor the movement,” the officer added.
The speculative CASOs were carried out at some other places in Srinagar on Monday. The joint parties could be seen checking the documents of bikers and many two-wheelers were seized at scores of place in Srinagar. Besides, thorough frisking of vehicles was also carried out. “ In most parts of city, CCTV surveillance has been updated and movement of public is monitored. Measures have been taken to monitor suspected movement” the officer said.
The officer said they have been urged by the senior officers to strengthen the general security grid on ground and to ensure better synergy and coordination among themselves and other sister agencies working at the ground level so that militants and anti-national elements do not get any chance to disturb the peaceful atmosphere prevailing in Kashmir, the officer added.
