SRINAGAR: Soon after an earthquake struck North India, former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah who lives in Srinagar, said that he ‘grabbed a blanket and ran’ as soon as he felt the tremors on Friday night.

The vice -president of the National Conference (NC), tweeted, “Not since the earthquake of 2005 have the tremors in Srinagar been bad enough to force me out of the house. I grabbed a blanket & ran. I didn’t remember to take my phone & so was unable to tweet “earthquake” while the damn ground was shaking.” Abdullah was referring to an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 that hit Pakistan in 2005, the tremors of which were felt in Jammu and Kashmir and led to massive destruction and loss of life. An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 on the Richter Scale hit Amritsar in Punjab on late Friday night.

Later, Abdullah tweeted, “Reports of the epicentre being around Amritsar. Hope no major damage or any loss of life.”
