First neonatal surgery done at GMC Kathua

The first neonatal surgery was successfully done at Government Medical College (GMC), Kathua. on Tuesday. A 2-day-old male child born in GMC Kathua, was diagnosed as Anorectal malformation (ARM condition where absent anal opening is seen). The patient was examined, investigated and planned for surgery. Dr Sandeep Sen, Pediatric Surgeon who is trained from PGI Chandigarh and at present working in GMC Kathua performed surgery which is first of its kind performed since GMC Kathua came into existence. Dr Sen who hails from far flung area of Kishtwar district is an alumni of GMC Jammu from where he passed his MBBS followed by M S in general surgery and later on joined PGIMER Chandigarh for Super specialist course in Pediatric Surgery. Dr Sen said that the procedure was with team effort of Anaesthesia lead by Dr Sanjay Kalsotra, Dr Rajesh Angral, Dr Ashufta Rasool and Dr Sanjeev Bharti, with the active support of Principal Dr Suleman Choudhary, HoD Surgery Dr Raj Rishi Sharma and HoU Dr Ravinder Kumar. Post-operative care part was done in NICU by Pediatrician led by Dr Varinder Kumar, Dr Rohit Chib and Dr Sudesh Manhas. Now, the patient is stable and is accepting breast feed which is healthy sign as per Dr Sandeep. Patient is planned for discharge on Wednesday, he said, adding, this surgery was first neonatal surgery performed at GMC Kathua, which is new medical college and presently in its infancy with limited resources.
