Home Minister Amit Shah has said the government is taking concrete steps for the development of the North East region. He said the Modi government’s goal is to not only ensure the overall development of the region but also to preserve its unique identity. Mr Shah was speaking after laying the foundation stones of Karbi Bhawan and Dimasa Bhawan in New Delhi today. He said the two Bhawans costing about 130 crore rupees will act as centres for promotion of the cultural identity of Karbi Anglong and Dimasa districts of Assam as well as the State. The Minister accused the previous Congress governments of neglecting the North East. He asserted that during the first term of Modi government, infrastructure development of the region has been given a special priority. He also said that incidents of violence and militancy have reduced considerably during the period. Mr Shah informed that over three lakh thirty thousand crore rupees have been earmarked for the North East by the 14th Finance Commission, which is more than 200 per cent of the amount allocated by the erstwhile UPA government. The Minister said the region is already on the country’s aviation map and will appear on Railways map next year.
