In the remote villages of Rajouri district, members of the Village Defence Committees (VDCs) remain ever-vigilant, working tirelessly to safeguard their families while also playing a crucial role in assisting the army and police in security operations. These committees, formed to ensure the security of critical infrastructure and prevent cross-border intrusions, have been instrumental in strengthening the region’s defense against terrorist threats.
VDC members, particularly those stationed in far-flung areas such as Khwas, Mogla, Narla, and Bambal, possess extensive knowledge of the local terrain, languages, and people, which makes them invaluable in counterterrorism efforts. They actively participate in cordon and search operations alongside security forces, keeping a close watch on suspicious activities, preventing acts of sabotage, and curbing the illegal smuggling of drugs and weapons across the border. Their dedication and bravery have made them a primary target for terrorists, who seek to disrupt peace in the region.
Despite their relentless commitment to national security, VDC members have expressed growing concerns over the lack of financial support and other necessary facilities from the government. They have urged authorities to provide them with salaries, as they risk their lives daily to monitor and counter terrorist activities. Many VDC members have fallen victim to terrorist attacks in the past, and their families continue to live under constant threat. Without financial assistance, they struggle to sustain themselves while performing their critical duties.
Speaking on their plight, the VDC members stated that their contribution to maintaining security in these border regions cannot be overlooked. They called upon the Lieutenant Governor’s administration and the central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to implement a concrete policy for their empowerment. They emphasized that regular salaries and additional resources would allow them to carry out their duties more effectively.
The VDC members appealed to the authorities to address their long-pending demands at the earliest, stressing that timely intervention would not only boost their morale but also enhance the security apparatus in these vulnerable areas.
