The recently concluded three-day conference of Directors General of Police (DGPs) and Inspectors General (IGs) in Bhubaneswar was a pivotal event in India’s quest to enhance internal security. Attended by the National Security Advisor, Union Home Minister, and the Prime Minister, the conference deliberated on critical issues such as terrorism, Naxalism, cybercrime, drug trafficking, and the activities of Khalistani sympathizers. The importance of this conference lies in the actionable strategies it devises to address these pressing concerns. A major focus area was cybercrime, which continues to evolve into a grave threat. The rise of organized cybercriminal groups has posed significant challenges to security agencies. While the discussions during the conference rightly acknowledged this issue, there is an urgent need for practical measures to counter cyber threats. Cybercriminals are exploiting technological advancements with alarming efficiency, and our security agencies must respond with equally innovative approaches. Public awareness about cybercrime is also crucial, as an informed citizenry can act as the first line of defense. Moreover, enhancing the capabilities of cybersecurity frameworks and upgrading the legal apparatus are imperative to counter this menace effectively. The conference also highlighted the persistent challenge of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, particularly in Jammu & Kashmir. While the measures discussed offer hope, sustained vigilance is required to tackle extremist elements operating across borders, including regions like Bangladesh. Both nations serve as potential breeding grounds for terrorism, necessitating a proactive approach from India’s security agencies. On the Naxal front, India has achieved significant success in curbing the activities of Left-wing extremists in recent years. However, there is no room for complacency, as remnants of these groups can reorganize. The implementation of stringent anti-Naxal measures, coupled with development initiatives in affected regions, remains critical to eradicating this threat. As India aspires to become a developed nation by 2047, it faces an array of internal security challenges. Conferences like this play a vital role in devising comprehensive strategies to address these threats. However, the true measure of success lies in the effective execution of these strategies and their tangible impact on the lives of ordinary citizens. While the discussions during the conference were promising, their outcomes must translate into concrete actions. Strengthening India’s internal security framework requires not only robust policies but also their swift and transparent implementation. Only then can we ensure a safer and more secure future for the nation.
