LEH: The Lieutenant Governor RK Mathur on his maiden visit to the famed Chemday monastery, paid visit to the construction site of the Public Gathering cum Yoga Centre (PGYC), a community project initiated by Chemday village.
At the 16th century monastery, Tsewang Dorje, member of the PGYC committee apprised LG Mathur about the collaborative efforts put in by the villagers for materializing the project. Estimated at a cost of approximately 21 Cr, out of which 1 Cr has been collected via public donations, Dorje highlighted the historic and religious significance of Chemday village and requested LG Mathur for aid in developing the said project as a yoga destination while also putting Chemday village on the tourism circuit of Ladakh.
LG Mathur stated that Ladakh has an identity as a place to seek peace and tranquility and that the possibilities for promotion of yoga in the region are immense. Later, Sarpanch and village head Chemday put forth the concern of water management in the village in the absence of reservoirs/zings. Stating that the entire village is primarily dependent on agriculture as their source of income, the Sarpanch requested LG Mathur to include a water management project under Special Development Package which will benefit the three villages of Chemday, Sakti and Kharu.
Former Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Leh Gyal Wangyal, Councilor Chemday Tsering Rigzin, Sarpanch Chemday village, Manager Chemday Monastery, President PGYC committee, venerables monks of the monastery and village representatives were present during the visit.
