Demonstrating its continuous commitment to supporting marginalized and nomadic communities, the Indian Army has carried out a humanitarian aid initiative for the Bakarwal community in Salani, a remote area of Poonch district. As part of this welfare effort, the Army distributed sleeping bags and mosquito nets to improve the quality of life and health safety of the residents, especially during the difficult winter season.
The Bakarwal community, known for its nomadic lifestyle and seasonal migration patterns, faces numerous hardships in terms of access to basic amenities, particularly in the hilly and rugged terrain of Poonch. With extreme winter conditions and the persistent threat of vector-borne diseases, the Army’s timely distribution of sleeping bags and insecticide-treated mosquito nets comes as a significant relief for the community.
The event was marked by the presence of local leaders, community elders, and Army officials, highlighting the spirit of unity and cooperation between the forces and the people. The sleeping bags distributed are specially designed to provide insulation against sub-zero temperatures, offering much-needed warmth and protection to vulnerable groups such as children, women, and the elderly. These items are expected to significantly improve the comfort and survival of the nomadic groups as they brave the cold nights in open and temporary shelters.
Equally important, the provision of mosquito nets serves a dual purpose – safeguarding the community from mosquitoes while also contributing to public health efforts to curb the spread of diseases like malaria and dengue, which are prevalent due to stagnant water bodies and limited medical access in the area.
Residents of the Bakarwal community expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Indian Army for this thoughtful gesture. Many acknowledged that such acts of kindness not only provide physical relief but also foster a sense of belonging and security. The initiative aligns with broader government efforts to uplift tribal and underprivileged populations by ensuring they receive essential aid and support. This welfare activity is part of the Indian Army’s larger vision to bridge the gap between remote communities and critical resources.
