In a significant move aimed at improving urban infrastructure, the cities of Jammu, Samba, and Kathua are set to be connected to a modern sewerage system. This project, managed by the Urban Environmental Engineering Department, is part of a broader initiative to enhance sanitation facilities and public health in these regions.
The first phase of this ambitious project has already been completed in Jammu city, covering the area from Bahu Fort to Bhagwati Nagar. This initial success has brought much-needed relief and convenience to the local population, addressing long-standing issues related to waste management and sanitation.
Following the progress in Jammu, attention has now shifted to the cities of Samba and Kathua. In Samba, an investment of Rs 70 crore has been allocated for the development of the sewerage network. This extensive project will cover areas including Bahu Fort, Gorkha Nagar, University, and nearby localities, providing modern sewage disposal facilities.
The project in Kathua is even more substantial, with a budget of Rs 90 crore. This funding will be used to expand the sewerage lines and connect the city’s main areas to the new system. The completion of this project is expected to significantly improve the living conditions and hygiene standards in Kathua.
According to a senior official of UEE Department, the second phase of the sewerage system in Jammu city will commence soon, focusing on the remaining areas. The projects in Samba and Kathua are also prioritized to ensure timely completion and maximum benefit to the residents. The sewerage system expansion involves laying new pipes, constructing treatment plants, and upgrading existing infrastructure. The use of advanced technology and efficient planning is expected to minimize disruptions during the construction phase.
Despite the ambitious scope of these projects, there have been concerns about budget constraints. In the past, incomplete projects in other areas have highlighted the need for adequate funding and proper management. However, officials are optimistic that the allocated budgets for Samba and Kathua will suffice to complete the projects as planned.
