Moment Kalki, a leading socio-political organization, vehemently opposes the recently announced reservation policy by the Jammu and Kashmir administration. The new policy, which increases the reservation quota to 60%, leaving only 40% for the open market, is both unjust and politically motivated. It blatantly disregards the rights and opportunities of the general category, further marginalizing them in a society already fraught with inequalities.
Key Issues with the New Reservation Policy:
Disproportionate Quota Allocation: The significant increase in the reservation quota to 60% drastically reduces the available opportunities for the general category to a mere 40% effectively 24% as other Categories also get Selection in above 40% and 6 % horizontal reservation is also included in this 40%. This imbalance is unfair and fails to consider the aspirations and potential of individuals outside the reserved categories.
Historical Exploitation: Since independence, the general category has been subjected to a series of politically driven reservation policies that have systematically eroded their rights and opportunities. This continuous exploitation has led to a steady decline in their social and economic conditions, exacerbating inequality and social division.
Economic Disparity: The economic condition of the general category has worsened over the years due to limited access to resources and opportunities.
The new reservation policy exacerbates this issue, pushing the general category further into economic hardship and reducing their chances of upward mobility.
Political Motivation: The decision to increase the reservation quota appears to be driven by political motives rather than genuine social need. As said reservation is provided on basis of geographical Location which is unconstitutional.
Such policies are often designed to secure vote banks rather than address the root causes of social disparity, leading to further polarization and division within society.
Impact on Meritocracy: An overemphasis on reservation undermines the principle of meritocracy. While affirmative action is necessary to level the playing field, it should not come at the cost of merit and excellence. The new policy risks sidelining deserving candidates from the general category who are equally in need of opportunities and support.
Call to Action: Moment Kalki urges the Jammu and Kashmir administration to reconsider and revise this policy to ensure a more balanced and equitable approach. We advocate for policies that promote inclusivity without compromising on fairness and merit. It is essential to strike a balance that provides opportunities for all sections of society while addressing historical injustices.
