The Gujjar-Bakarwals residing South of Pir Panjal migrates to higher reaches during the summer months in search of richer pastures for their live stocks. As the shepherds and live-stock move faces medical emergencies in these remote inaccessible areas. Indian Army in collaboration with Government department of AYUSH and Animal husbandry and dairying department organized a Medical & Veterinary camp in the Balmatkote village of Reasi to provide primary health care facility in these far flung Dhoks and to provide ailing patients of essential first aid and medication free of cost. The Veterinary & Medical camp was primarily organized keeping in view paucity of veterinary medical facilities to support of large number of animals, cattle as well as Gujjar & Bakkarwal present in the area. A team of Army and civil doctors carried out medical examination and treatment of the livestock. Doctors and Veterinary Assistants Surgeon & Senior Veterinary Pharmacist from Department of Animal husbandry and dairying & Department of AYUSH of Reasi district also extended their support to make the medical and veterinary camp a great success. Approximately 156 livestock & families were checked and examined. All patients were thoroughly checked for ailments and medicines thereafter were distributed free of cost during the event in presence of Village Heads.
The camp contributed enormously in assisting the Gujjar- Bakarwal as cattle rearing remains the primary occupation of the people in the area.
