NEW DELHI, May 29
BSNL’s engagement with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) for a Rs 132 crore revival plan of the company is a futile exercise, the BSNL Employees Union (BSNLEU) has said.
“Already the company has engaged consultants such as Deloitte and KPMG. All the recommendations of these consultants have already been implemented. Still, BSNL’s condition has worsened,” the association said in a letter to BSNL CMD PK Purwar.
On Monday, FE reported that BCG will prepare a three-year roadmap to transform state-owned BSNL so that it can effectively compete with private telecom operators.
The key areas on which BCG will advise the loss-making telecom service provider include reducing operational costs, improving revenue, providing better customer experience, leveraging emerging technologies to improve sales and developing sales and marketing strategies in line with industry benchmarks.
“The root of the problem lies elsewhere,” the union said.
“Basically, the decline of BSNL is attributable to the company’s inability to expand its networks with state-of-the-art technology,” it added. The union stated that government-imposed obstacles, such as the denial of permission for the upgradation of BSNL’s 4G-compatible BTSs and prohibiting BSNL from procuring 4G equipment from global vendors on par with private operators, have hindered the company’s progress. It suggested that the management leverage the existing talent and experience within its workforce, instead of outsourcing the work and wasting resources.
