BARI BRAHMANA: Dogra Degree College, Bari Brahmana, Samba, celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 23, 2024.
This year’s theme, “Be Part of the Plan,” calls on governments, indigenous peoples and local communities, non-governmental organizations, lawmakers, businesses, and individuals to showcase their efforts in supporting the implementation of the Biodiversity Plan.
Students and faculty members of Dogra Degree College marked the day by taking selfies with native plant species of India under the supervision of Palak Gupta, Convener of the Eco Warriors Club.
Biological diversity, often understood in terms of the wide variety of plants, animals, and microorganisms, also includes genetic differences within each species-for example, between varieties of crops and breeds of livestock-and the variety of ecosystems (lakes, forests, deserts, agricultural landscapes) that host multiple kinds of interactions among their members (humans, plants, animals).
The focus of the day was to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. Biodiversity is the living fabric of our planet.
It underpins human well-being in the present and in the future, and its rapid decline threatens nature and people alike. The main global drivers of biodiversity loss are climate change, invasive species, over-exploitation of natural resources, pollution, and urbanization. To halt or reverse this decline, it is vital to transform people’s roles, actions, and relationships with biodiversity.
Dr. Samar Dev Singh Charak, Secretary of Dogra Educational Trust, appreciated the initiative taken by Dr. Bela Thakur, Principal of Dogra Degree College, for conducting such an event to raise awareness about the native plant species of India.
