Dogra Degree College, in association with its National Service Scheme (NSS) unit, celebrated National Panchayat Day at the adopted village of Upper Kartholi. The event aimed to raise awareness about the role of Panchayati Raj institutions in rural governance and development, with a special focus on leveraging technology for sustainable livelihoods. Ms. Priyanka Sharma, NSS Program Officer, delivered a comprehensive lecture on various social welfare schemes and how villagers can effectively utilize these schemes for their benefit. National Panchayat Day is observed annually on 24th April to commemorate the establishment of Panchayati Raj in India and to recognize the importance of decentralized governance in rural areas. This year, Dogra Degree College chose the theme “Panchayati Raj: Leveraging Technology for Sustainable Livelihoods” to highlight the crucial role technology plays in enhancing rural livelihoods and ensuring sustainable development. Ms. Priyanka Sharma’s lecture covered a range of government schemes aimed at improving the lives of rural communities. She explained the eligibility criteria, benefits, and application procedures for schemes such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), and Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY). She also emphasized the importance of leveraging technology, such as digital platforms and mobile applications, to access and benefit from these schemes.
The event featured interactive sessions where villagers had the opportunity to ask questions and seek clarification on various schemes.
A discussion on success stories of scheme beneficiaries was also mentioned to inspire others to avail themselves of these opportunities. Speaking at the event, Mr Tarsem Singh, Sarpanch, Upper kartholi, highlighted the importance of National Panchayat Day in promoting grassroots democracy and empowering rural communities. He commended Dogra Degree College and the NSS unit for their efforts in organizing the event and urged villagers to take advantage of the information shared to improve their livelihoods.
