Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor University of Jammu addressed the participants from across the country alongside students and faculty of IIT Mumbai at e-Yantra Symposium hosted by IIT Mumbai. Prof. Rai’s address was part of a Panel Discussion on the Implementation of the National Education Policy.
The symposium served as a vibrant platform for robust discussions on pivotal aspects of educational policy with Prof. Rai shedding light on the University of Jammu’s flagship four-year “Design Your Degree” program under NEP2020 with the motto, “Teach to Transform, Educate to Empower and Learn to Lead”. Supported by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory and Chancellor, University of Jammu, Shri Manoj Sinha and under the able guidance of Vice Chairman Higher Education Council Government of JK UT Prof. Dinesh Singh, this initiative is aligned with the principles outlined in the National Education Policy 2020, signifying a transformative shift in higher education. In his address, Prof. Rai elaborated on how the program, tailored for undergraduate students, is meticulously designed to cater to market demands, offering them a holistic and interdisciplinary learning experience. He emphasized that the “Design Your Degree” program is strategically crafted to empower students to transition from being job seekers to job creators and providing them the freedom to select subjects that resonate with their passions and aspirations, enabling them to march to the beat of their own drum.
Furthermore, Prof. Rai underscored the program’s focus on developing a comprehensive range of skills among students, encompassing vital competencies such as life skills, Soft skills, team building skills, analytical skills, Digital and Technical skills, problem-solving skills, and critical and creative thinking. This unique program has garnered widespread recognition, both nationally and internationally, with the Standing committee of Parliamentary Board for Women Education and Sports commending the initiative and recommending its incorporation into the National Curriculum Framework overseen by the University Grants Commission..
In addition to his presentation, Prof. Rai actively engaged with students and participants, fostering an interactive dialogue on various emerging educational pursuits.
