A group of 36 students from MIER College of Education visited the Botanical Garden at theUniversity of Jammu, Jammu. The purpose of the visit was to enhance studentsunderstanding ofplant diversity, conservation, and sustainable practices. The visit commenced with a guided tourby Dr.Sajan Thakur, In-Charge Botanical Garden, and botanical garden staff, who providedinsights into the various sections of the garden. Students were able to observe a wide range ofplant species, including rare and endangered ones. The staff also explained the importance ofconserving native plant species and the role of botanical gardens in research and education.
Dr. Thakur enthusiastically shared insights about a variety of medicinal and ornamental plants, captivating the students with fascinating facts and stories. He also showcased plants that have existed on Earth since the Jurassic period and even earlier, adding an intriguing dimension to the botanical tour.
Throughout the tour, students engaged in lively discussions concerning environmental conservation and the ramifications of human actions on plant biodiversity. Their visit to the Botanical Garden offered a tactile learning opportunity, enriching their comprehension of plant diversity, preservation, and sustainable practices.
It granted them valuable insights into the significance of safeguarding indigenous plant varieties and the pivotal role botanical gardens play in advancing research and educational initiatives.
Furthermore, the visit spurred students to engage proactively in environmental conservation endeavours and advocate for sustainable practices in their daily lives. They expressed interest in organizingsimilar visits in the future, demonstrating a commitment to fostering plant biodiversity conservation efforts. The visit to the Jammu University Botanical Garden proved instrumental in shaping the learning journey of MIER College students, instilling in them a deeper appreciation for ecological protection and management.
