JAMMU:
Jammu and Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation is all set to take strict measures to curb electricity theft, which is causing losses. The corporation is considering permanently cutting off electricity supply to those repeatedly caught stealing power. Recently, they conducted another inspection in areas where power theft cases were previously detected.
Once again, they found consumers engaging in electricity theft, despite penalties imposed earlier for confiscating their electronic devices. Frustrated by the continuous involvement of these consumers in theft even after preventive measures, the power corporation is contemplating permanently disconnecting their electricity supply.
Officials revealed that after detecting cases of electricity theft in Jammu and Kashmir, nearly 10,000 kilowatts of power lines were upgraded following the revision of consumers’ loads. This led to improvements in the supply system.
However, there are still many consumers resorting to electricity theft using illegal connections to avoid hefty bills. To deter such consumers, enforcing strict regulations has become imperative.
The Jammu and Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited are working on a dual strategy. Along with taking action against electricity theft, penalties are being imposed according to the Electricity Act. Over thousands of inspection drives have been conducted during the current fiscal year.
Despite these efforts, some consumers persist in illegal activities, perpetuating the cycle of power theft. Hence, considering adopting separate policies against such consumers is under consideration.
The power corporation is conducting regular inspections in non-metered areas for load adjustments. Local administrations and the police are providing full assistance to ensure consumers don’t obstruct inspections.
The Deputy Commissioners have instructed officers to ensure the purchase and sale of electricity devices are regulated to prevent an increase in power consumption. Shopkeepers have been strictly instructed to comply; otherwise, they will face legal consequences.
