New Delhi, Jan 30: The voting for Chandigarh Mayoral Elections has ended and the counting process of counting has begun. Results of the polls will be announced soon. Congress and AAP are in an alliance, and they are in a high-stakes battle with the BJP. In the last many years, BJP has won the Mayor’s post.
The AAP has fielded Kuldeep Kumar, who moved the high court against the postponement of the polls, for the mayor’s post, while the Congress has nominated candidates for senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor. The BJP has chosen Manoj Sonkar for the mayor’s post, and Kuljeet Sandhu and Rajinder Sharma for the other two posts.
The BJP has the advantage of having 14 councillors and the Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher as an ex-officio member in the 35-member Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. The AAP has 13 councillors, the Congress has seven, and the Shiromani Akali Dal has one.
“”This was not just an unconstitutional and illegal thing but also a treason. Whatever happened today during the mayoral elections in Chandigarh can only be called a treason,” says AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha at a press conference as BJP candidate Manoj Sonkar wins post of mayor.
Presiding Officer Anil Masih has been accused of tampering with several votes. Allegations are being made by the councilors of Congress and AAP that Anil Masih has been seen in the video using a pen on many votes.
Taking to Twitter, Arvind Kejriwal said, “The manner in which dishonesty has been done in broad daylight in the Chandigarh Mayor elections is extremely worrying. If these people can stoop so low in a mayor’s election, then they can go to any extent in the country’s elections. This is very worrying.”
BJP’s mayoral candidate Manoj Sonkar got 16 votes in total. AAP and Congress alliance’s candidate Kuldeep Kumar got 12 votes, 8 were declared invalid. Along with this, BJP’s Manoj Sonkar was announced as the mayor.
BJP candidate Manoj Sonkar emerges victorious in Chandigarh Mayor Election by trouncing INDI bloc. Both Congress and AAP suffer a massive and embarrassing loss despite having numerical advantage.
Councilors of all 35 wards have cast their votes for the post of Mayor. The last vote was given by BJP councilor Rajendra Sharma of Ward No. 35. Now in a few minutes the votes will be counted and the name of the mayor will be announced by the presiding officer.
