The School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSSH) at MIER College organised a valuable visit to Pulse Hospital, Jammu, offering three-year undergraduate honours students from Semester V a first-hand experience in various psychiatric practices. The visit aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical applications.
The focal point of the visit was the interaction between B.A. Honours Psychology students and Dr. Rajinder Kumar, a distinguished figure in psychiatry with a rich background in clinical practice and academic research.
Dr. Kumar, a fervent advocate for mental health awareness and quality psychiatric care, engaged students in insightful discussions, particularly emphasizing the mental status examination and the process of information collection from clients.
The session proved immensely beneficial for students aspiring to enter the field of clinical psychology, as Dr. Kumar highlighted the extensive scope of the discipline. He shared details about institutions offering clinical psychology programs and recommended essential reading materials for students pursuing psychology.
During the discussion, Dr. Kumar presented real-life cases, including bipolar disorder, hallucinations, depression, phobias, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Illustrating various psychiatric treatment modalities through live case studies, he provided students with a comprehensive understanding of the practical application of theoretical concepts.
The post-lecture question-and-answer session allowed students to seek advice on careers in psychiatry, clarify doubts, and gain insights into Dr. Kumar’s personal experiences in the field. This interactive segment enriched students’ understanding of the intricacies and challenges of psychiatric care.
Dr. PriyaChoudhary and Ms. SonikaKumari, who successfully organized the visit, were lauded for their efforts by Prof. Adit Gupta, Director and Principal of MIER College.
He expressed appreciation for the School of Social Sciences and Humanities’ commitment to providing students with practical exposure to psychiatric assessment.
The visit to Pulse Hospital not only enhanced students’ theoretical knowledge but also provided a unique opportunity to witness the practical application of psychological concepts in a clinical setting. MIER College remains dedicated to offering such experiential learning opportunities, contributing to the holistic education of its students.
