On the occasion of World AIDS Day, Dr. Rameshwar Singh, Zonal Medical Officer of PHC KOTICHANDYAR, organized an awareness program to educate the students of Government High School Koti Chandyar about HIV/AIDS.
The program covered the causes, symptoms, and prevention of HIV/AIDS, emphasizing the importance of safe sex and the availability of HIV testing and treatment services.
Dr. Rameshwar said AIDS, a chronic and potentially life-threatening condition caused by HIV, attacks the body’s immune system, making it vulnerable to infections. Symptoms of AIDS vary from person to person and may take years to develop, including fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, night sweats, diarrhea, and weight loss. While there is no cure for AIDS, effective treatments enable people with HIV to live long and healthy lives, he added.
“Prevention strategies include practicing safe sex by using condoms consistently, avoiding needle or syringe sharing, and getting regular HIV testing,” he added.
Dr. Rameshwar emphasized the importance of societal support for individuals living with HIV/AIDS. He highlighted that despite advancements in treatment, the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS persists, often leading to discrimination and isolation. He urged the students and community members to extend empathy, compassion, and acceptance towards those affected by HIV/AIDS, reminding them that AIDS is a curable disease, and with proper treatment and support, individuals can live long and fulfilling lives.
