Who will do agriculture in Jammu and Kashmir, now it will not be decided by caste. Taking an essential decision in the meeting of the State Administrative Council chaired by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday, along with Mahajan and Khatri fraternity, the Sikh community was allowed to buy and cultivate agricultural land.

Earlier, the system before Article 370 was being carried till now. Under this, these fraternities were prohibited from buying agricultural land in the state. Their organizations had been raising this issue for a long time. Dainik Jagran had raised this issue prominently. With the decision of the Administrative Council, the Mahajan, Khatri and Sikh communities are now allowed to invest in agricultural activities besides buying agrarian land without any problem. This is expected to help in rejuvenating the agriculture sector in Jammu and Kashmir.

This is likely to create new employment opportunities and boost economic growth. According to the decision, the District Deputy Commissioners can now purchase up to 20 kanals (2.5 acres) for agriculture and allied activities and up to 80 kanals (10 acres) for horticulture-related works. However, they have to complete this process within 30 days of receipt of the application. With this decision of the state government, the non-farming community of Jammu and Kashmir will also be encouraged to adopt it as a profession by investing in activities like agriculture, horticulture and animal husbandry.
