VIJAYPUR: Terming Jammu Declaration as a way forward in further strengthening regional and religious bonds in Jammu and Kashmir, former minister and senior National Conference leader Surjeet Singh Slathia today exhorted people to work towards achieving it for harmonious growth of the society in large.

“Unity in diversity has been strength of Jammu and Kashmir and this spirit has to be promoted and sustained by bridging the gap”, Slathia said while addressing a public meeting at Village Barjani Bari Brahmana in Vijaypur Constituency this afternoon, adding that time has come when such a proposition should emanate from Jammu, the abode of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians. Slathia reiterated that the Declaration would go a long way in encouraging dialogue between the people and the regions, which will eventually help in restoring trust and confidence, the essence of the glorious ethos of this part of the country.

It is imperative to reinvigorate the bonds of brotherhood and tranquility between communities and satiating peculiar urges and aspirations of the people besides the regions and the sub-regions.  There should be no reason for the people of whichever faith they belong to feel marginalized or discriminated against, he said, adding that this is actually the political philosophy of the National Conference which has stood the test of times during most difficult times of history. He asserted that secularism is the bedrock of the party and this legacy has survived the vicissitudes of history. The former minister also referred to the local issues and expressed concern over the slow pace of development and process of recruitment that has brought despondency among the unemployed educated youth. There is a need for a fast track recruitment process to fill up the vacant posts and eventually empower the youth, most of them getting over aged.

Slathia also stressed the need for fillip in the developmental activities and thrust on completion of the works taken up years ago. The administration must ensure dependable utility services, especially drinking water and power supply.
