Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday recorded the highest single-day spike of 701 COVID-19 positive cases, while the death toll due to the disease reached 244 with eight fresh fatalities, officials said. Among the fresh cases, 100 were recorded from the Jammu region and 60 from the Kashmir Valley, they said. “Eight persons, who were COVID-19 positive, died over the past 24 hours in Jammu and Kashmir,” the officials said, adding while seven deaths took place in the valley, one death was reported in the Jammu region. The death toll due to COVID-19 has reached 244 — 225 in the valley and 19 in the Jammu region, they said. The union territory recorded the highest single-day spike of 701 new COVID-19 cases during the past 24 hours, the officials said. With these fresh cases, the total number of infected persons in Jammu and Kashmir has risen to 13,899. There are now 5,844 active coronavirus cases, while 7,811 patients have recovered from the infection, they said. The cases detected on Sunday included 80 persons who had returned to Jammu and Kashmir recently. The officials said Srinagar district in central Kashmir recorded 290 new positive cases, followed by 84 in Kupwara in north Kashmir.
