To observe World AIDS Day, the District Red Cross Society (DRCS) today organized an informative awareness programme in Government Degree College Kathua. The event aimed to educate and raise awareness about AIDS/HIV among the students and faculty members.
The theme of this year’s World AIDS Day is ‘Let Communities Lead’.
The College Principal Prof. R.K Pandita, who was the Chief Guest, in his address said “The awareness of HIV AIDS is necessary for the masses especially students at the tender age i.e. adolescents because its having a devastating effect on the lives of millions of Indians.”
The programme witnessed the presence of medical professionals and guest speaker Medical Officer SDH Nagri Parole Dr. Manisha Sharma. She delivered a comprehensive lecture on AIDS/HIV, discussing its causes, prevention, treatment, and available support services. Her presentation emphasized the importance of education, early detection, and destigmatizing the disease.
The event began with an opening address by Secretary Red Cross Society Kathua Om Parkash Sharma, who expressed his gratitude to the college administration and participants for their active involvement in spreading awareness and combating the stigma surrounding AIDS/HIV. He stressed the significance of collective efforts in preventing the transmission of the virus and supporting those living with the disease.
During the lecture, Dr. Manisha Sharma shed light on the alarming statistics and the societal impact of AIDS/HIV. She shared crucial information about the modes of transmission and dispelled common myths. Moreover, she encouraged students to adopt safe practices and to get tested regularly, urging them not to discriminate against those infected but to extend empathy and support.
The event also included a Q&A session, allowing the attendees to seek clarifications and gain a deeper understanding of the discussed topics.
Dr. Sharma addressed the queries with patience and expertise, ensuring everyone felt enlightened and empowered.
